Egypt Demands Referee Team Removed After World Cup Loss

The Egyptian Football Federation has filed a formal complaint with FIFA demanding the removal of the refereeing team that officiated Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup round of 16.

Federation president Hany Aburida accused French referee François Letexier and his crew of “serious refereeing mistakes” and “double standards” that he said cost Egypt a historic place in the quarterfinals. The statement, released Wednesday, called for a full investigation into both the on-field officials and the video assistant referees.

The controversy centers on several key decisions. A first-half goal by Mostafa Ziko was ruled out after a VAR review spotted a foul earlier in the buildup. Ziko later scored again to put Egypt 2-0 ahead, but Argentina rallied with goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi before Enzo Fernández struck the winner in added time. Egyptian officials argue they should have been awarded a penalty in the buildup to Argentina’s decisive goal, citing a pull on Hamdy Fathy by Alexis Mac Allister.

Coach Hossam Hassan echoed the federation’s frustration, telling reporters after the match, “We have been cheated unfairly today, we have suffered injustice. We haven’t seen respect or fair play.” He suggested that external factors may have influenced decisions, saying, “Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running.”

FIFA has not yet responded to Egypt’s complaint. Refereeing controversies are not uncommon at major tournaments, but demands for entire officiating crews to be excluded are rare. Analysts say the case highlights ongoing debates about the use of video technology in football and the perception of bias when global stars are involved.

International reaction has been mixed. Some fans and commentators sympathized with Egypt’s grievances, while others argued that refereeing decisions are part of the game and unlikely to be overturned. The incident underscores the high stakes of World Cup matches, where a single call can alter the course of national football history.

Egypt, seeking its first-ever quarterfinal appearance, now faces elimination amid lingering questions about fairness and transparency in officiating. The outcome of FIFA’s review could shape confidence in refereeing standards for the remainder of the tournament.
