SAN DIEGO — A U.S. Marine Corps F-35 fighter jet crashed near San Diego during a training mission, but the pilot ejected safely before the aircraft went down, military officials said. Emergency responders quickly secured the crash site, and no civilian casualties or significant damage to surrounding communities were immediately reported. The Marine Corps has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, while officials continue to assess the extent of the damage.
The aircraft involved was an F-35B Lightning II, the short takeoff and vertical landing version of the fifth-generation stealth fighter used by the U.S. Marine Corps. The jet is designed to operate from amphibious assault ships and short runways, making it a critical component of U.S. expeditionary military operations. Military officials said the pilot followed emergency procedures and was safely recovered after ejecting from the aircraft.
