(VIDEO) A firefighter confronted pro-Palestinian protesters near the 9/11 Memorial in New York as the United States marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The confrontation came as Americans and visitors gathered to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed when al-Qaida hijackers seized four commercial airliners and carried out attacks in New York, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.
The anniversary remains one of the most significant dates in modern U.S. history. The attacks transformed American foreign policy and national security while triggering the U.S.-led “war on terror” and military campaigns in Afghanistan and, later, Iraq.
The presence of pro-Palestinian protesters near the memorial drew criticism from some attendees, while the demonstrations reflected continuing international divisions over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the war in Gaza.
The confrontation highlighted the tension that can arise when contemporary political disputes intersect with commemorations of historic tragedies.
