(VIDEO) U.S. President Donald Trump said he would “love” to see a united Ireland during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, suggesting that Irish reunification could eventually become a reality.
Responding to a reporter’s question, Trump said, “It’s going to happen eventually,” while acknowledging that the United Kingdom would have a role in any such development.
The comments touch on one of the most sensitive political issues in the history of the British Isles. Ireland was partitioned in 1921, creating Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom while the rest of the island became the Irish Free State, later the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland’s constitutional status has remained a major source of political division.
The issue was at the center of decades of conflict known as the Troubles, which largely ended with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. The agreement established that Northern Ireland will remain part of the United Kingdom unless a majority of people in Northern Ireland vote for reunification with the Republic of Ireland.
Under the agreement, any decision on Northern Ireland’s constitutional future must therefore be determined through democratic consent. Trump’s remarks are unlikely to alter that legal framework, but they highlight the continued international interest in the question of Irish unity and the complex relationship between Dublin, London and Belfast.
