Tottenham Hotspur have officially parted ways with head coach Ange Postecoglou, just 16 days after he led the club to their first European trophy in over four decades. The Australian’s departure comes exactly two years after his appointment on 6 June 2023, closing a turbulent tenure that combined historic highs with dramatic domestic decline.
Europa League Triumph Overshadowed by League Collapse
Postecoglou guided Spurs to a landmark UEFA Europa League final victory over Manchester United, ending a 17-year trophy drought and delivering their first European title since 1984. However, despite this moment of triumph, Tottenham endured a disastrous domestic campaign in the 2024/25 Premier League, finishing 17th, their worst-ever showing in the competition.
The club cited poor league form—just 78 points from 66 Premier League matches over two seasons—as a key factor behind the decision. Injuries and a shift in focus toward the European campaign were acknowledged, but the board concluded that a managerial change was essential for future competitiveness.
In an official statement, Spurs wrote:
> “Whilst winning the Europa League ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph. It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts.”
Postecoglou becomes just the third manager in Spurs’ history—after Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw—to win a European trophy.
Postecoglou Bids Emotional Farewell
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Postecoglou expressed pride in his time at the club:
> “That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication, and unwavering belief… I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. We are forever connected.”
He praised his players and coaching staff, calling them “legends” who had accomplished something special against the odds.
A Mixed Legacy
Postecoglou’s reign began with promise. He became the first manager in Premier League history to win Manager of the Month in each of his first three months and had Spurs top of the table after 10 unbeaten games in the 2023/24 season. But that campaign ended with a 5th-place finish, and the following year’s domestic collapse—22 losses, 41 injury cases, and a near brush with relegation—proved too much to overlook.
What’s Next for Spurs?
Tottenham now begin their fifth managerial search since 2019 as they prepare for the 2025/26 season. While Postecoglou’s European success will be remembered fondly, the club is seeking a new direction to restore stability and Premier League relevance.
