The Federal Government has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to address the alarming rise in Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in Sokoto State. A high-level delegation comprising UNICEF, the European Union, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the Federal Government visited Sokoto to advocate for urgent intervention and increased funding to combat the crisis.

During the visit, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nantewa Yilwatda, emphasized the need for durable solutions rooted in local capacity. She highlighted the importance of leveraging Sokoto’s vast agricultural production to combat hunger, stating, “There can be no food security without peace.” The minister also lauded the collaboration between the state and humanitarian partners, stressing the need for sustained efforts to end malnutrition in Sokoto.

The Sokoto State Government has allocated N500 million to combat the crisis, with UNICEF pledging N1.5 billion in counter-funding. The European Union has also reiterated its commitment to supporting vulnerable children in Sokoto. Governor Ahmed Aliyu expressed appreciation for the partnership and pledged sustained political will to address the crisis.

The delegation visited the Sokoto State Specialist Hospital, where they witnessed firsthand the toll of SAM on children and health workers. Health officials warned that supplies of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) may run out by September, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The minister directed UNICEF and partners to submit a detailed report on the bottlenecks affecting RUTF importation, vowing to work with relevant agencies to ensure swift resolution.

The partnership aims to strengthen the healthcare system, improve child nutrition, and reduce malnutrition-related deaths. With the UNICEF’s support, the Sokoto State Government is taking bold steps to protect its most vulnerable citizens. The collaboration is expected to have a lasting impact on the lives of children in Sokoto, providing them with essential nutrition supplies and support.
