In a heartfelt interview, Emma Heming Willis opened up about the challenges her family faces as Bruce Willis’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) progresses. The 70-year-old Die Hard star, who was diagnosed with the condition in 2022, has recently moved out of the family home into a one-storey residence with a full-time care team to accommodate his increasing needs.

Emma, 47, who had been his primary caregiver, said their daughters—Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11—are coping as best they can but are deeply affected by their father’s absence. “They grieve. They miss their dad so much. He’s missing important milestones, that’s tough for them,” she said. “I think they’re doing well, all things considered. But it’s hard. I don’t know if my kids will ever bounce back. But they’re learning, and so am I”.

She also addressed criticism from online trolls who questioned her decision to move Bruce out of their home. Emma defended the move as necessary for his care and safety, saying, “Too often, caregivers are judged quickly and unfairly. This was the hardest decision, but it was the right one for Bruce”.

Bruce Willis stepped away from acting nearly three years ago after his diagnosis was made public. Since then, Emma has become a vocal advocate for dementia awareness and caregiver support. She has shared her journey through social media and public appearances, aiming to shed light on the realities of living with and caring for someone with FTD.

Despite the emotional strain, Emma emphasized the resilience of their children. “Kids are resilient,” she said, though she admitted that phrase used to frustrate her. “People didn’t understand what we were walking through”.

The family’s openness has resonated with many, drawing attention to the impact of neurodegenerative diseases not just on patients but also on their loved ones. Emma’s advocacy continues to highlight the need for compassion, understanding, and resources for families navigating similar challenges.
