ANNANDALE, Va. (FN), Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself inside their home early Thursday, authorities said.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said officers responded to the residence shortly after midnight following a 911 call placed by one of the couple’s teenage children. Both Fairfax, 47, and his wife, Cerina, were found dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the same firearm was used in both shootings. The children were unharmed, police said.

Fairfax, a Democrat, served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022. His tenure was marked by controversy after he faced sexual assault allegations, which he denied. He later returned to private law practice.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, but the incident is being treated as a murder-suicide.
