SOKOTO, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, said Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu’s record in office will silence critics and secure his re‑election in 2027, urging citizens to reject what he described as propaganda against the government.

Speaking at a retreat organized by the North‑West Tinubu/Matawalle Peace and Unity Initiatives, Matawalle accused opponents of spreading misinformation to discredit the administration. He insisted Tinubu’s achievements in security, economic reforms and infrastructure would ultimately prove decisive. “Those attacking President Tinubu with lies and propaganda will be disappointed. His achievements and commitment to national development will speak for themselves in 2027,” he said.

The minister pointed to strengthened armed forces and security agencies, claiming significant gains against insurgency and banditry in northern Nigeria. He added that Tinubu had inherited serious challenges but shown “courage and determination” in addressing them, while also investing in education and human capital development.

Matawalle criticized political actors for what he called deliberate attempts to mislead Nigerians. He urged young people not to be drawn into divisive narratives, saying, “Our youths must reject falsehood and focus on initiatives that promote national development, peace and social harmony.”

Yusuf Abubakar, convener of the retreat, said the gathering aimed to deepen grassroots support for Tinubu and highlight his administration’s reforms. He called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to sustain public awareness of government programs and praised Matawalle’s role in mobilization efforts across the North‑West.

Globally, the remarks underscore the political pressures facing African leaders as they balance governance challenges with public expectations. Tinubu’s administration is under scrutiny at home and abroad as Nigeria confronts insecurity and economic strains, making debates over his record and future prospects a matter of regional and international interest.
