TEHRAN (FN), Iran has vowed retaliation after U.S. forces seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz, raising doubts over ongoing negotiations aimed at extending a fragile ceasefire.
Iran’s military command condemned the seizure as “armed piracy” and warned that the act would not go unanswered. The vessel was intercepted Sunday as part of a U.S. naval blockade designed to enforce sanctions and prevent Iranian exports.
The incident comes at a critical moment, with talks already strained by recent clashes and mutual accusations. Analysts say the seizure could derail diplomatic efforts, as Tehran hardens its stance and Washington insists the blockade is necessary to curb destabilizing activities in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil shipments, has long been a flashpoint. Similar confrontations in 2019 and 2024 saw tankers detained and released only after weeks of tense negotiations. Observers warn that renewed escalation could disrupt energy markets and draw in regional powers.
Diplomats fear that Iran’s vow of retaliation may involve targeting commercial vessels or expanding military activity, further complicating efforts to stabilize the Middle East.
