Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted consignments of cocaine and cannabis concealed in food flasks at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The agency reported that 12 large parcels of cocaine, weighing 2.80 kilograms, were hidden in the false bottom of flasks bound for the United Kingdom on a Virgin Atlantic flight.

Officials said the discovery was part of intensified surveillance at the airport, noting that traffickers continue to devise new methods to evade detection. The NDLEA stressed that the operation reflects its commitment to curbing drug smuggling and protecting Nigeria’s international reputation.

Public reaction has been one of both relief and concern. Many Nigerians praised the agency for its vigilance, saying the interception demonstrates progress in the fight against narcotics. Others expressed worry that traffickers are increasingly creative, warning that the trend poses risks to travelers and undermines national security.

On social media, hashtags such as #NDLEAIntercepts and #DrugTraffickingNigeria gained traction, with users debating whether harsher penalties or broader reforms are needed. Some commentators argued that beyond arrests, authorities must address the networks financing and coordinating these operations.

Civil society groups welcomed the seizure but urged the government to strengthen international cooperation. They emphasized that drug trafficking is a global challenge and Nigeria must work closely with foreign agencies to dismantle syndicates operating across borders.

For the NDLEA, the interception underscores its determination to stay ahead of traffickers’ tactics. While the agency’s success has drawn commendation, the incident highlights the ongoing battle against organized crime and the need for sustained vigilance in Nigeria’s airports and waterways.
