ABUJA, Nigeria (FN), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. The president also authorized a special take‑off grant of 15 billion naira to support the college’s development.
Officials said the new campus is part of Tinubu’s broader effort to strengthen police training and expand security infrastructure across the country. The Police Academy, which currently operates in Wudil, Kano State, has long faced capacity challenges, with calls for additional facilities to meet rising demand for professional training.
The decision comes amid heightened concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, ranging from banditry and kidnappings to communal clashes. Analysts say expanding police training institutions could help improve recruitment, professionalism, and community policing.
Similar initiatives have been undertaken in the past. In 2013, the federal government upgraded the Police Academy in Wudil to a degree‑awarding institution. More recently, new police training schools have been established in states such as Rivers and Enugu to address regional security needs.
Reactions to Tinubu’s announcement were swift. Security experts welcomed the move, saying it could enhance the quality of policing nationwide. Community leaders in Ogun State expressed optimism that the new campus would bring jobs and development to Yewa South.
