ILORIN, Nigeria (FN), Suspected bandits killed at least three soldiers in a pre‑dawn attack on a joint security post in Kemanji community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, officials said Tuesday.

The attackers reportedly overpowered the troops, carting away weapons and an army gun truck during the raid. Security sources said reinforcements have since been deployed to the area, while investigations are underway to track the assailants.

Banditry, once concentrated in Nigeria’s North‑West, has increasingly spread into neighboring states, raising concerns about the reach of armed groups. Kwara, which borders Niger State, has seen sporadic attacks in recent years, though large‑scale assaults remain less common compared to Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna.

Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere. In 2021, bandits ambushed soldiers in Zamfara, killing several and seizing military equipment. In 2023, armed groups attacked a police station in Niger State, carting away rifles and vehicles. Analysts say such raids are often aimed at strengthening the firepower of criminal networks.

Reactions to the Kwara attack were swift. Local residents expressed fear over the growing insecurity, while civil society groups urged authorities to step up protection for rural communities. Security experts warned that the theft of military hardware could embolden bandits and complicate counter‑operations.

Officials say the military is committed to restoring calm in Kaiama and surrounding areas, stressing that operations will continue until the perpetrators are apprehended.
