Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Names Garo as Deputy, Awaits Lawmakers’ Approval

KANO, Nigeria (FN), Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has nominated Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor, sending the name to the State House of Assembly for confirmation.

The nomination follows the removal of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who was impeached by the Assembly earlier this month. Yusuf described Garo as a seasoned politician and administrator whose appointment would strengthen governance in the state.

Garo, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, is widely regarded as a grassroots mobilizer with strong political influence in Kano. His nomination is seen as part of Yusuf’s broader effort to consolidate his administration and stabilize the political climate following recent tensions.

The governor urged lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process, emphasizing the need for continuity in leadership. “We are committed to delivering on our promises to the people of Kano, and this nomination is a step toward ensuring effective governance,” Yusuf said.

The development comes amid heightened political activity in Kano, where the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has faced internal challenges and opposition pressure. Analysts say Garo’s nomination could help Yusuf strengthen alliances and maintain stability in the state’s political landscape.
