ABUJA, Nigeria (FN), President Bola Tinubu has approved seventeen billion naira for community-led development projects across Nigeria’s 8,804 political wards, the presidency announced Wednesday.
The initiative, part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, is designed to empower local communities to identify and execute projects that directly address their needs. Officials said the funds will be disbursed through the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, with oversight mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability.
Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said the program reflects Tinubu’s commitment to grassroots development. “This funding will allow communities themselves to decide what projects matter most, whether it is schools, clinics, roads or water supply,” he said.
The approval comes amid growing calls for more inclusive governance and equitable distribution of resources. Analysts say the ward-level approach could strengthen citizen participation and reduce the disconnect between federal programs and local realities.
Nigeria has long struggled with uneven development, with rural areas often left behind in infrastructure and social services. By channeling funds directly to wards, the government hopes to accelerate small-scale projects that can make immediate impacts.
Critics, however, warn that without strict monitoring, the initiative risks being undermined by mismanagement or political patronage. Civil society groups have urged the government to publish detailed spending reports and involve independent monitors.
The program is expected to roll out in phases, with communities submitting proposals for approval before funds are released.
