JOS, Nigeria (AP), A student of the University of Jos who was abducted by gunmen has regained freedom after spending 10 days in captivity, authorities said Wednesday.
The student, whose name was withheld for security reasons, was kidnapped near the university campus earlier this month. Family members confirmed the release, saying the victim was reunited with relatives late Tuesday.
Police in Plateau State said the student was freed following “sustained pressure” on the kidnappers, though they did not disclose whether a ransom was paid. The incident is the latest in a string of abductions targeting students and travelers in Nigeria’s north-central region.
Kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common in Nigeria, with universities and schools often singled out. In 2021, dozens of students were abducted from Greenfield University in Kaduna State, while hundreds of schoolchildren have been taken in Zamfara and Niger states in recent years.
Authorities say they are working to improve campus security and curb the rising wave of abductions, which has fueled public anger and heightened calls for stronger government action.
