Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed that the court martial of 36 military officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu will resume on May 8, 2026, in Abuja. The proceedings, held behind closed doors, mark a critical stage in one of the country’s most high‑profile military trials in recent years.

The General Court Martial was inaugurated on April 24 at the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, following months of investigation into the alleged coup attempt. According to officials, the accused officers will be formally arraigned and required to enter pleas of guilty or not guilty. The Defence Headquarters emphasized that the process is being conducted under the Armed Forces Act, with strict adherence to due process and fairness. Journalists have been barred from coverage, underscoring the sensitivity of the case.

Public reaction has been divided. Supporters of the military’s action argue that the trial demonstrates accountability and reinforces discipline within the armed forces. “This is necessary to protect Nigeria’s democracy and ensure loyalty to constitutional authority,” one analyst noted. Critics, however, have raised concerns about transparency, questioning why proceedings are closed to the media and warning that secrecy could undermine public trust. Families of some accused officers have also expressed anxiety, calling for fairness and clarity in the process.
