Massachusetts Mother Charged With Murder After Two Children Found Dead in Wellesley Home

WELLESLEY, Mass. (FN) A Massachusetts mother has been charged with murdering her two young children, ages 6 and 7, whose bodies were found inside their Wellesley home, police said Sunday.

Authorities identified the suspect as 49‑year‑old Janette MacCausland. She was arrested in Vermont as a fugitive and is expected to face court Monday before being returned to Massachusetts. Investigators said the case is especially shocking because children are expected to feel safest with their mothers.

The victims, whose names have not been released, were discovered after police responded to a welfare check at the family’s home. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene and later confirmed by medical examiners to have suffered fatal injuries.

MacCausland’s arrest has drawn comparisons to other high‑profile cases in the U.S. where parents have been accused of killing their children. In 2023, a Massachusetts mother, Lindsay Clancy, was charged with strangling her three children in Duxbury, sparking national debate about mental health and parental stress. In 2018, Colorado father Chris Watts was convicted of murdering his wife and two daughters, a case that shocked the nation and highlighted the hidden dangers of domestic violence.

Policy makers and child‑protection advocates reacted with alarm. The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families said it is cooperating with investigators, while lawmakers renewed calls for stronger support systems for families facing mental health challenges. “No child should ever face harm in their own home,” said State Rep. Alice Peisch, who represents Wellesley.

On social media, the case has generated widespread outrage and sorrow. Many users expressed disbelief that a mother could commit such an act, while others called for greater awareness of parental mental health struggles. Hashtags such as WellesleyTragedy and ProtectChildren trended locally, with community members organizing vigils to honor the victims.

MacCausland is expected to be arraigned on two counts of murder. Prosecutors said she will be held pending trial once returned to Massachusetts.
