A Ukrainian drone struck a luxury high-rise in Moscow early Sunday, damaging several floors just days before Russia’s annual Victory Day parade. Authorities reported no casualties, but the incident has heightened tensions in the capital as security forces prepare for the May 9 celebrations.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the strike, saying emergency services responded quickly and residents were evacuated. “There were no injuries. The situation is under control,” Sobyanin said.
The attack targeted the Mosfilm Tower, an upscale residential complex located about 7 kilometers from the Kremlin and near the Russian Defense Ministry. The strike underscores vulnerabilities in Moscow’s air defenses, which have faced repeated challenges from Ukrainian drones since 2023.
Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, is one of Russia’s most important national holidays. This year’s parade is expected to be scaled back, with fewer heavy weapons on display, amid concerns about further drone attacks.
Russian officials condemned the strike as an act of terrorism. State media emphasized that Ukraine’s drone campaign is aimed at disrupting civilian life in the capital.
On social media, some Muscovites expressed frustration over repeated drone incidents, questioning the effectiveness of air defense systems. Ukrainian commentators, meanwhile, framed the strike as part of Kyiv’s broader effort to pressure Russia by targeting symbolic and strategic sites.
Civil society groups in Europe warned that escalating drone attacks could further destabilize the region. “These strikes highlight the urgent need for renewed diplomatic efforts, even as military operations intensify,” one advocacy organization said.
In May 2023, drones damaged buildings near the Kremlin, prompting Russia to tighten air defense measures.
On May 3, 2026, Ukrainian forces struck Russia’s Baltic port of Primorsk, damaging oil facilities and vessels.
Earlier this year, Ukraine claimed responsibility for drone attacks on Russian oil export hubs, part of a strategy to weaken Moscow’s war economy.
Analysts say the timing of the strike is symbolic, aimed at undermining Russia’s Victory Day narrative of strength and resilience. The incident also highlights Ukraine’s growing reliance on long-range drones to hit targets deep inside Russian territory.
Despite the damage, Russian officials insist the parade will go ahead as planned, though with heightened security.
