Healthcare at Risk as Lagos Pharmacists Demand Intervention

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) in Lagos has raised concerns over what it describes as a growing shortage of pharmacists in the state, urging government authorities to intervene before the situation worsens. The association warned that the gap in manpower is undermining healthcare delivery and could compromise patient safety if left unaddressed.

PSN leaders stressed that pharmacists play a critical role in ensuring safe medication use and supporting broader public health goals, and they called for urgent recruitment and better incentives to attract professionals into the sector. Supporters of the appeal argue that strengthening the pharmaceutical workforce is essential to improving Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly in urban centers like Lagos where demand is high.

Critics, however, note that the challenge is not unique to Lagos, pointing to systemic issues such as underfunding, poor working conditions, and limited career opportunities across the country’s health sector. They argue that without comprehensive reforms, piecemeal interventions may not deliver lasting solutions.

The call for action highlights the broader strain on Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure, where shortages of skilled professionals continue to pose risks to effective service delivery and public confidence in the system.
