Ghana’s Parliament has confirmed that Kwame Ohene Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The Speaker and parliamentary leadership are working with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to clarify the circumstances, as no charges have been disclosed.
Frimpong’s detention has raised questions in Accra, with Parliament noting that details remain unclear. Authorities have not confirmed whether he was traveling in an official or private capacity, nor have they provided information on the reasons for the detention or its duration. The case has drawn significant public interest, with citizens awaiting clarification from both Dutch and Ghanaian officials.
Kwame Ohene Frimpong, born in 1986 in Agogo, Ashanti Region, is a first-term legislator known for his entrepreneurial and philanthropic work. He studied at Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion Senior High School, Central University College, and later pursued further education in the United Kingdom. He is the founder of Salt Media GH, which operates Salt FM, Salt TV, and saltfmonline.com, and has also invested in food and hospitality businesses, including The New Grace restaurant in Chicago.

Frimpong has been recognized for community development projects, including classroom construction, a clinic in Asante Agogo, and contributions to the Agogo Central Mosque. His efforts earned commendations from traditional and religious leaders. Politically, he contested the 2024 elections as an independent candidate, defeating the incumbent and later aligning with the NDC majority caucus.
In Parliament, Frimpong made history by delivering the first statement in Twi in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, introduced a Campaign Finance Reform Bill in 2026, and awarded scholarships to underprivileged students. He has been named among Avance Media’s Top 50 Most Influential People in Ghana and received the African Achievers Award for entrepreneurship.
The detention of a sitting MP abroad carries diplomatic sensitivity and could spark political fallout. Analysts note that the incident may fuel debates about accountability and transparency, while Parliament has assured the public that updates will be provided once more information becomes available.
