JOS, Nigeria (FN) — Suspected gunmen killed a 25-year-old vigilante during an attack on Tanjol village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, authorities and community leaders said Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Daniel Danladi Choji, was shot dead while on patrol Monday night as attackers stormed the Vwak and Tanjol areas in multiple groups, firing indiscriminately. Residents said the assailants were repelled by a combined team of Operation Rainbow and other security operatives.

Community member Bulus Jok confirmed Choji’s death, describing him as a vigilante who had been helping to protect the area.

The Berom Youths Moulder-Association condemned the attack and urged the Plateau State Government and security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further violence. In a statement, National Publicity Secretary Rwang Tengwong called for a halt to grazing activities in affected areas, alleging links between such movements and repeated assaults.

The group also demanded intensified military operations in enclaves of armed groups, warning that failure to act decisively could lead to continued bloodshed in Plateau State and across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

Efforts to reach security agencies for official confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
