Jonathan Allies: Only Ex-President Can Speak on 2027 Ambition

ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — Political associates of former President Goodluck Jonathan cautioned Thursday against attempts by individuals to speak on his political future, insisting that only Jonathan himself can authoritatively declare his position ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Goodies Movement, a group of Jonathan’s supporters, issued a statement after remarks attributed to former presidential aide Jude Imagwe suggested Jonathan had no interest in a political comeback. The group said Imagwe’s comments should not be treated as Jonathan’s official position.

“Only statements issued directly by him, through officially designated representatives, or via recognized communication channels should be regarded as definitive expressions of his political position,” said Sam Presto, coordinator of the movement. He urged Nigerians to disregard claims not originating from Jonathan’s authorized platforms.

The group also called on media organizations to exercise caution when reporting on Jonathan’s political intentions. “Any statement purporting to reflect the position of a former Head of State should be accompanied by clear evidence of authorization and current representation,” Presto said.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has remained an influential figure in national politics. His name has surfaced repeatedly in conversations about the 2027 elections, though he has not publicly declared any ambition.

Reactions quickly spread across social media and political circles. On X, user @NaijaObserver wrote: “Jonathan’s silence is louder than Imagwe’s words. Nigerians deserve clarity, not speculation.” Another user, @AdaVoice, added: “If Jonathan wants to run, he should say so himself. No more political ventriloquism.”

Policy makers also weighed in. Senator Ali Ndume told reporters: “Jonathan is respected across party lines. But only he can decide his future. We should avoid unnecessary distractions.”

Stakeholders within the ruling party expressed caution. A senior APC member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “Speculation about Jonathan’s return is destabilizing. Until he speaks, everything else is noise.”

Civil society voices echoed the call for clarity. Aisha Yesufu, a social commentator, said: “The Nigerian people deserve facts rather than assumptions, clarity rather than conjecture, and authentic representation rather than political guesswork.”

The debate underscores the growing intensity of conversations around the 2027 elections, with Jonathan’s potential role remaining one of the most closely watched questions in Nigerian politics.
