Nigeria’s immigration authorities have uncovered multiple visa violations involving foreign nationals in Plateau State, the Nigeria Immigration Service said, as the agency intensified efforts to enforce immigration laws and ensure compliance with residency and work permit regulations.
The Nigeria Immigration Service, known as the NIS, said the violations were discovered during a routine enforcement operation carried out across parts of the state. Officials said the exercise formed part of a nationwide campaign to verify the immigration status of foreign nationals and ensure that individuals entering the country comply with the conditions attached to their visas.
According to the agency, preliminary investigations found that some of the foreign nationals were engaged in activities that were not permitted under the type of visas they obtained before entering Nigeria. Authorities did not immediately disclose the number of people involved or their nationalities, saying investigations remain ongoing.
The NIS said those found to have breached immigration regulations could face sanctions under Nigerian law. Depending on the outcome of the investigations, penalties may include fines, cancellation of visas, deportation or restrictions on future entry into the country.
Immigration officials said the operation was not directed at any specific nationality or group but was part of regular compliance checks aimed at strengthening border security and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s immigration system. They urged employers, businesses and organizations that hire foreign workers to ensure all employees possess valid immigration documents and appropriate work authorization.
The development comes as Nigeria increases efforts to improve migration management amid concerns over illegal employment, visa abuse and cross border security.
