Bayelsa Nigeria — Confusion continues to cloud the cause of a recent oil spill in Azuzuama, a riverside community in Bayelsa State, as residents tally losses and relive a tragedy that has shaped their collective memory for more than a decade.
The spill, reported on June 25, 2026, came from the 6‑inch Azuzuama–Tebidaba flow line, a section of aging infrastructure now operated by Oando after it took over assets from the Nigeria Agip Oil Company. For many in the Bassan clan, the sight of crude oil spreading across their waterways felt like an old wound reopening.
The community is still grieving the 2015 pipeline explosion that killed 14 people, including residents, government officials and oil workers during a Joint Investigation Visit. “We cannot forget July 9, 2015,” said a resident who identified himself as Ebi. “Fourteen people died that day. The scar remains.”
Today, Azuzuama is locked in a tense dispute with Oando over what triggered the latest spill. The Joint Investigation Visit ended without agreement, leaving regulators, community representatives and the company divided over the cause.
The Environmental Conservation Agriculture and Rural Development (ECARD) said the investigation stalled after parties failed to reach a conclusion. The Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment’s representative, Engr. Reuben Enai, said a visual inspection of the ruptured line showed signs of “induced corrosion,” suggesting deliberate damage rather than natural wear.
Community leaders reject that claim, arguing that years of neglect and deteriorating infrastructure are to blame. Residents say the spill has contaminated drinking water, destroyed fishing grounds and disrupted livelihoods in a region already battered by repeated environmental disasters.
The uncertainty has deepened mistrust between the community and the oil operator, with residents fearing that delays in determining the cause could slow cleanup efforts and complicate compensation talks .For Azuzuama, the spill is more than an environmental emergency. It is a reminder of broken promises, unresolved investigations and a long struggle for accountability in Nigeria’s oil‑producing heartland.
