Seven people, including a pilot and six tourists, were killed Wednesday when a helicopter crashed in northern Kenya near Mount Ololokwe, a popular destination in the country’s safari region.

The helicopter went down at about 9:13 a.m. local time in Samburu County while traveling from the Loisaba Conservancy toward the Ewaso Nyiro area, according to Kenyan authorities. The remote location made access to the crash site difficult as emergency teams moved in.

The luxury safari company &Beyond confirmed that the helicopter was carrying its guests. The company expressed its concern over the incident but did not immediately release further details about the passengers. The nationalities of the tourists were initially not disclosed by authorities.

The crash occurred near Mount Ololokwe, a distinctive landmark surrounded by the wildlife and rugged landscapes that have made northern Kenya a popular destination for international travelers. Tourists frequently use small aircraft and helicopters to move between remote safari lodges and conservancies across the region.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the accident and said an investigation had been opened to establish what caused the helicopter to go down. The aircraft was identified in preliminary reports as a Eurocopter EC130 B4.

The Kenya Red Cross and other emergency teams were involved in efforts to reach the crash site. The difficult terrain presented an additional challenge for rescuers operating in the remote area.

The crash has cast a shadow over Kenya’s tourism industry, where helicopter and small aircraft services play an important role in connecting visitors with remote wildlife reserves. Safari operators often rely on aircraft to transport tourists across large areas that would otherwise require long journeys by road.

Kenya has experienced other fatal helicopter accidents in recent years. In February 2026, six people, including a Kenyan lawmaker, were killed in a separate helicopter crash in western Kenya, according to The Associated Press. The repeated incidents have kept aviation safety under scrutiny, particularly for operators serving remote areas.

Authorities have not yet said whether weather, mechanical failure, pilot error or another factor contributed to Wednesday’s crash. Investigators will examine the aircraft, flight records, weather conditions and other evidence before determining the cause.

For the families of those aboard, however, the investigation will come after an immediate and devastating loss. A journey that began as part of a safari experience ended in tragedy in the Kenyan wilderness.

As investigators work to determine what happened, authorities are expected to provide more information about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the crash. Until then, officials have urged caution about speculation as the formal investigation continues.
