Global Ocean Temperatures Hit Record High, Scientists Warn of Climate Risks

The world’s oceans have reached their highest average surface temperature on record, adding another warning sign that the planet’s climate is moving into increasingly unfamiliar territory.

Data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service showed global ocean surface temperatures reaching about 21.1 degrees Celsius in August. The timing is particularly unusual because ocean temperatures normally reach their annual high earlier in the year before beginning to decline.

The latest reading continues a pattern scientists have been watching with growing concern. In June, Copernicus reported that daily sea surface temperatures had already climbed above the record levels seen at the same point in 2023 and 2024. On June 21, the average reached 20.86 degrees Celsius, slightly above comparable readings from those previous record setting years.

Scientists say human caused climate change remains the underlying driver of the long term rise in ocean temperatures, while natural climate patterns can temporarily push temperatures even higher. A developing El Niño is adding to concerns that ocean and atmospheric temperatures could remain unusually high in the months ahead.

The concern is not simply about warmer water. Oceans absorb most of the excess heat trapped in the Earth’s climate system. NOAA says roughly 90 percent of that excess heat is stored in the oceans, and global upper-ocean heat content reached another record in 2025, continuing a decades long upward trend.

The consequences are already visible in different parts of the world. European waters have experienced exceptional marine heat this summer. A recent World Weather Attribution analysis found that human caused climate change was the main factor behind record breaking temperatures across European seas, with the Mediterranean averaging about 27 degrees Celsius in July and a buoy near Mallorca recording roughly 33 degrees Celsius in early August.

Marine scientists warn that prolonged heat can transform entire ecosystems. Coral reefs are particularly vulnerable because sustained high temperatures can force corals to expel the algae they depend on, causing bleaching. NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch says severe bleaching has become more widespread, frequent and intense, increasing the risk of disease and coral death.

Fisheries are also at risk. Warmer water can contain less oxygen, alter food chains and force fish populations toward cooler regions. In South Korea, a marine heatwave this summer was linked to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of farmed fish, illustrating how ocean warming can quickly become an economic problem for communities that depend on the sea.

Scientists reacting to the latest temperatures have stressed that the record should be viewed as part of a longer trend rather than an isolated event. Copernicus data show that 2024 had the highest annual average sea surface temperature on record for the extra-polar oceans, at 20.87 degrees Celsius. Temperatures remained unusually elevated in 2025 before climbing sharply again during 2026.

The warning signs stretch back several years. In 2023, temperatures across the North Atlantic stunned researchers when the region recorded its warmest June in the Copernicus ERA5 record. The North Atlantic was 0.91 degrees Celsius above average that month, far exceeding the previous June record set in 2010.

Then came 2024, which NOAA confirmed as the warmest year globally in records extending back to 1850. The 10 warmest years in that record had all occurred during the previous decade, highlighting how quickly exceptional heat has become more common.

The historical comparison goes much further. Scientists have known since the 19th century that greenhouse gases can trap heat in the atmosphere. What has changed dramatically is the amount of carbon dioxide released through the burning of coal, oil and natural gas since industrialisation. The oceans have acted as an enormous buffer, absorbing much of the resulting heat that would otherwise have remained in the atmosphere.

But that protection comes at a cost. Hotter oceans expand, contributing to rising sea levels. They can provide additional energy and moisture to tropical storms, intensify marine heatwaves and place coastal ecosystems under greater stress. Researchers also worry that continued warming could weaken the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide efficiently.

The latest figures have renewed calls from climate scientists and environmental campaigners for governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening protection for vulnerable marine ecosystems. Mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds and kelp forests not only support wildlife and fisheries but also provide natural protection for coastal communities.

For millions of people living along coastlines, including communities across Africa, Asia and small island states, ocean warming is far from an abstract scientific measurement. It can affect fishing income, food prices, storms, flooding and the gradual loss of land to rising seas.

One temperature record does not determine the planet’s future. But the sequence of records being broken in recent years is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss as an unusual season.

The ocean has absorbed much of humanity’s excess heat for generations. Scientists are increasingly warning that what is now happening beneath and across its surface is one of the clearest indications yet of how rapidly the global climate is changing.
