Major General Abubakar Wase has officially assumed command as the 44th General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 1 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 1 Joint Task Force Operation Fansan Yamma. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Headquarters 1 Division in Kaduna, marking a significant transition in leadership.

The event was attended by senior military officers and featured the signing of handing and taking over notes between outgoing GOC Major General Mayirenso Saraso and incoming GOC Major General Abubakar Wase. The new GOC was decorated with the 1 Division insignia, symbolizing his new role. In his farewell address, Saraso expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for the privilege of serving as GOC and appreciated the officers and soldiers for their support during his tenure.

The appointment of Major General Wase is part of a recent posting and reshuffle approved by the Chief of Army Staff. Wase’s new role comes with significant responsibilities, including leading operations against security threats in the region. As GOC, he has charged officers and soldiers to be professional in discharging their duties in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy.

Saraso urged the troops to accord the same level of support to his successor, ensuring continuity and progress in the division’s operations. The outgoing GOC’s message emphasized the importance of teamwork and cooperation in achieving the division’s objectives.

With the change in leadership, Major General Wase is poised to build on the progress made by his predecessor. The 1 Division Nigerian Army plays a critical role in maintaining security in the region, and the new GOC’s experience and leadership skills will be essential in addressing the challenges ahead.
