ABUJA, Nigeria (AP), Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada and lawmaker Ngwu have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC, strengthening the party’s presence in the National Assembly.
Wadada, who represents Nasarawa West, confirmed his move after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa. He cited confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and a desire to align with the ruling party ahead of future elections. Ngwu’s defection further consolidates APC’s numbers in parliament.
Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, Tony Nwoye of Anambra State has emerged as the Minority Whip, giving the opposition caucus a stronger organizational structure. His election is seen as a step toward improving coordination among minority parties in legislative debates.
In a separate development, President Tinubu has forwarded a new ministerial nominee to the Senate for screening and confirmation. The nominee’s identity and portfolio are expected to be disclosed during the Senate’s next plenary session.
The defections, leadership changes, and cabinet expansion highlight Nigeria’s fluid political landscape, where party alignments and appointments continue to shape the balance of power ahead of the 2027 elections.
