Nigeria Child Abuse Case Sparks Outrage in Lagos Community

Residents of Igando, a suburb of Lagos, were thrown into shock after police said a couple allegedly beat their 10 year-old adopted daughter to death following months of reported maltreatment.

Authorities identified the suspects as Paul Onyeama and Adline Ogbonna, who lived on Jemesi Papa Street. Neighbors told investigators the child had been subjected to persistent abuse, including frequent assaults and being sent on strenuous errands despite her young age.

Police said the girl’s death has sparked outrage in the community, with residents demanding justice and stricter enforcement of child protection laws. The couple has been taken into custody, and the case is under investigation.

Nigeria has faced repeated concerns over child abuse and domestic violence. In recent years, several high-profile cases have drawn attention to gaps in enforcement of child rights laws. In 2020, authorities prosecuted a couple in Anambra State for the death of their ward after prolonged abuse, while in 2023, Lagos police arrested guardians accused of starving and beating a foster child.

Child rights advocates say the Igando case underscores the urgent need for stronger monitoring of adoption and foster care arrangements. Nigeria’s Child Rights Act, passed in 2003, criminalizes abuse and guarantees protection, but enforcement remains inconsistent across states.

The Lagos State government has pledged to pursue the case vigorously. Officials said the tragedy highlights the importance of community vigilance and reporting suspected abuse before it escalates.
