The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has confirmed it is aware of allegations of sexual misconduct involving Pastor Tayo Sobowale of its Watchtower parish in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and says it is awaiting the outcome of an ongoing investigation before taking further action.

The statement, issued Saturday by RCCG Publicity Secretary Lanre Oyegbola, emphasized that the church is monitoring developments closely. “We are aware of the matter and await the conclusion of the investigation,” Oyegbola said, noting that the church will respect due process while applying its internal disciplinary procedures if necessary.

Sobowale serves as a youth pastor at RCCG’s Watchtower parish, located near Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), a major institution that draws thousands of young people to Ogbomoso. His position placed him in close contact with students and youth congregants, making the allegations particularly sensitive in a university community where safeguarding concerns are paramount.

The controversy began during a church service confrontation when a female member publicly accused Sobowale of attempted rape and coercion. Videos of the confrontation quickly spread online, sparking outrage and prompting other women to reportedly come forward with similar claims, though the exact number of accusers remains unverified. Sobowale has denied rape allegations, admitting only to one sexual encounter which he insists was consensual.

Police in Oyo State have not yet released a formal statement, and it remains unclear whether charges will be filed. The case has nonetheless sparked widespread debate in Ogbomoso, a historic city in southwestern Nigeria known for its educational institutions and vibrant Christian community. Congregants expressed concern, with some calling for transparency and accountability while others urged caution until investigations are complete.

Religious observers note that RCCG’s global presence with parishes across Africa, Europe, and North America means the case could attract international attention. Analysts say how the church handles the allegations may influence public trust in one of Nigeria’s most influential Pentecostal institutions.

Nigeria has witnessed similar controversies in recent years involving clergy accused of misconduct. In 2019, a pastor in Abuja faced allegations that triggered nationwide debate about safeguarding practices in churches. In 2022, another case in Ogun State highlighted the lack of independent reporting mechanisms for victims. These incidents have fueled growing calls for accountability and transparency in faith-based organizations.

Experts argue that sexual misconduct allegations in religious institutions highlight broader issues of trust, power dynamics, and safeguarding. “Churches must adopt stronger policies to protect vulnerable members and ensure allegations are investigated independently,” said a Lagos-based legal analyst. Civil society groups have urged churches to establish clearer reporting channels and provide counseling support for victims.

For now, RCCG has urged patience as investigations continue. The outcome will not only determine the future of Pastor Sobowale but could also shape public confidence in the church’s commitment to accountability and safeguarding.
