PDP Spokesman Remanded Over Defamation Case Against Kwara Governor

The Kwara State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olusegun Olushola Adewara, was on Thursday remanded at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre after a State High Court in Ilorin declined to grant him bail in a case involving alleged defamation of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Adewara, who serves as the spokesperson for the PDP in Kwara, was arraigned on charges linked to statements considered defamatory against the governor. His bail application was opposed, and the presiding judge ordered that he be held in custody pending further proceedings.

The case has quickly become a flashpoint in Kwara politics. Supporters of Adewara insist the charges are politically motivated, describing them as an attempt to silence opposition voices ahead of the 2027 elections. Government officials, however, maintain that the matter is strictly legal and that the governor has the right to seek redress against defamatory remarks.

Adewara’s detention underscores the growing friction between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition PDP in the state. Political observers note that the case could deepen partisan divides, especially as both parties begin to mobilize for the next election cycle. The PDP has vowed to stand by its spokesman, while APC leaders argue that the rule of law must take its course.

The controversy has also sparked wider debate about freedom of speech and the limits of political criticism in Nigeria. While defamation laws provide protection for individuals against false and damaging claims, critics argue that such cases are often used to muzzle dissent and intimidate opposition figures.

The court is expected to continue hearing the matter in the coming weeks, with Adewara’s legal team preparing to reapply for bail. For now, his remand at Oke-Kura Correctional Centre remains a symbol of the tense political climate in Kwara State, where every move by the opposition and ruling party is closely scrutinized.
