LAGOS, Nigeria (FN) — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it has restored part of the Benin–Egbin 330-kilovolt transmission line after a system disturbance disrupted electricity supply in Lagos and surrounding areas.

The incident, which occurred earlier this week, caused outages across parts of Nigeria’s commercial hub and nearby communities. TCN said engineers worked to stabilize the grid and bring sections of the line back into service, while efforts continue to fully restore power.

The Benin–Egbin line is a critical component of Nigeria’s national grid, linking generation facilities to distribution networks that serve millions of homes and businesses. Disruptions on the line often have wide-reaching effects, particularly in Lagos, which is the country’s largest city and economic center.

Nigeria’s power sector has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure, frequent grid collapses, and insufficient generation capacity. Analysts say the latest disturbance underscores the need for investment in transmission and distribution systems to improve reliability.

TCN said it is investigating the cause of the disturbance and pledged to strengthen monitoring and response mechanisms to prevent future incidents.

Public reaction has been mixed, with residents expressing frustration over recurring outages, while business groups warn that unstable electricity supply continues to hinder productivity and investment.

Globally, Nigeria’s power challenges are closely watched by investors and development partners, as reliable energy is seen as essential to unlocking Africa’s largest economy’s growth potential.
