LAGOS, Nigeria — An Anglican bishop has urged Nigeria’s federal government to intensify efforts to rescue pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State, warning that their prolonged captivity is deeply troubling.

Rt. Rev. James Odedeji, Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, made the appeal Sunday while speaking with reporters in Lagos. He said the government must not relent in its responsibility to protect citizens, especially children whose education and safety are at stake.

The abductions occurred in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where armed assailants reportedly seized several pupils and teachers. The incident has sparked widespread concern across Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become a recurring crisis.

Odedeji described the situation as “alarming,” stressing that the longer the victims remain in captivity, the more devastating the impact on their families and communities. He called for urgent action to secure their release and restore public confidence in security agencies.

The bishop’s remarks came shortly after he presided over the installation of Venerable Emmanuel Kolawole as the seventh Dean of the Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church in Ikeja, Lagos. The ceremony drew clergy, parishioners, and community leaders.

Kidnappings targeting schools have become a disturbing trend in Nigeria, with attackers often seeking ransom payments. International observers have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of students, particularly in rural areas where security presence is limited.

Odedeji’s appeal adds to growing pressure on authorities to prioritize the rescue mission. He emphasized that beyond political promises, concrete measures must be taken to ensure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.

The bishop also urged Nigerians to continue praying for the victims and their families, while calling on government agencies to work together to end the cycle of abductions that threatens education and national stability.
