The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has dismissed reports claiming its 2026 National Officers’ Election has been postponed, insisting that only its National Executive Council (NEC) has the constitutional authority to suspend or alter the process.

In a statement Tuesday, NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN rejected a document circulating online that allegedly contained recommendations from a sub‑committee and comments attributed to the Attorney General of the Federation. The document reportedly directed the postponement of the election and proposed sweeping changes to the NBA’s electoral framework.

The association described the alleged directives as unconstitutional, stressing that the Attorney General has no legal authority to interfere in its internal affairs. NBA leaders said the independence of the body must be respected and protected.

Among the purported directives were the disbandment of the Electoral Committee, postponement of the national officers’ election, termination of the current election service provider, and the creation of a caretaker committee to oversee the vote.

Other recommendations reportedly included incorporating the National Identification Number into the voting process and amending the NBA Constitution to remove universal suffrage. The association warned that such changes would undermine democratic participation within the legal community.

Osigwe emphasized that the NBA remains committed to conducting its elections in line with its constitution and democratic principles. He reassured members that the NEC alone retains the authority to make decisions about the electoral process.

The association’s response highlights growing tensions between Nigeria’s legal community and government authorities over autonomy and governance. By rejecting external interference, the NBA signaled its determination to safeguard its independence.

This dispute underscores broader debates about professional associations in Nigeria and their resistance to political influence, with the NBA positioning itself as a defender of constitutional order and democratic values.
