Australia confirmed Wednesday that the highly contagious H5 bird flu strain is now spreading locally among wild birds, ending the continent’s long‑held status as the only major landmass free of the virus. Chief veterinary officer Beth Cookson said testing showed the pathogen circulating among greater crested terns in South Australia, a development scientists had warned was inevitable after the first detection in a migratory seabird in June. She said early transmission in coastal colonies suggests the virus could move more widely through waterfowl, shorebirds and seabirds, and warned that once H5 becomes entrenched in wild populations, losses in susceptible species will be unavoidable.
Australia’s agriculture minister said there is no evidence of mass mortalities and little risk to human health, adding that poultry operations remain unaffected. The national science laboratory confirmed seven new cases this week, bringing the country’s total to 27 detections. Global health agencies say the risk to humans remains low, but the virus has caused extensive wildlife deaths across Europe, Asia and the Americas, underscoring why Australia’s first local transmission is being closely watched.

Authorities reported four suspected cases on Kangaroo Island, a major tourism site and home to endangered sea lions, prompting the suspension of beach tours to protect the animals. Conservationists warn the spread could deepen extinction pressures on Australia’s unique fauna, nearly half of whose bird species and more than 80% of its mammals exist nowhere else. Scientists noted that H5 recently killed more than 13,000 elephant seal pups on the remote Heard and McDonald Islands, highlighting the strain’s destructive impact on marine wildlife.
Biosecurity teams have increased surveillance at ports, farms and coastal reserves to prevent spillover into poultry or mammals, and researchers are studying why seabird colonies appear particularly vulnerable to rapid transmission.
