A 50-year-old man has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command over allegations that he sexually assaulted two minors in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area, authorities said, as investigators await medical examination results before determining the next stage of the case.

Police said the suspect, identified only as Godwin, was arrested on Monday by officers from the Eleme Police Division following a complaint filed by the parents of two girls, aged 13 and 11. According to the complaint, the suspect allegedly sent the girls on errands before inviting them into his room upon their return, where he is accused of sexually assaulting them. The parents also alleged that the suspect threatened the children to prevent them from reporting the incidents.

Rivers State Police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, confirmed the arrest on Thursday and said the suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue. She said investigators had issued medical examination forms to the victims’ family, adding that the results would help establish evidence relevant to the allegations. Police said the findings would determine whether the case would be transferred to the appropriate investigative unit for further action.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to allow due process to take its course. Under Nigerian law, suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Child protection advocates have continued to call for prompt investigations and support services for alleged victims of abuse, stressing the importance of safeguarding children’s welfare and ensuring accountability where criminal offenses are established.
