Xenophobia: NIDCOM Warns Against Violence on Nigerians, Black Immigrants

ABUJA (FN), The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has urged South African authorities to intensify protection for Nigerians and other black immigrants following renewed concerns about xenophobic attacks.

In a statement, NIDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that Nigeria values its longstanding relationship with South Africa but warned that recurring violence against foreign nationals undermines regional unity and cooperation. She called on the South African government to ensure the safety of Nigerians living and working in the country, stressing that “every African deserves dignity and protection, regardless of nationality.”

The Commission noted that xenophobic incidents have historically strained ties between the two nations, with Nigerian businesses and communities often targeted. Dabiri-Erewa highlighted that such attacks not only harm individuals but also weaken Africa’s collective push for economic integration and solidarity.

Civil society groups in Nigeria echoed NIDCOM’s call, urging both governments to strengthen bilateral mechanisms that safeguard migrants. Social media reactions reflected frustration, with many Nigerians demanding stronger diplomatic action, while others appealed for calm and dialogue.

Analysts say the issue underscores broader challenges of migration, unemployment, and social tensions in South Africa, where foreign nationals are sometimes scapegoated. NIDCOM’s intervention signals Nigeria’s determination to protect its citizens abroad while reinforcing the principle of African unity.
