Borno Deputy Speaker Withdraws from 2027 Senate Race, Endorses Ndume

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (FN), The Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Askira, has withdrawn from the 2027 senatorial race in Southern Borno and endorsed incumbent Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume.

Askira announced his decision after consultations with Governor Babagana Zulum and party stakeholders, saying he would abide by the consensus reached within the All Progressives Congress (APC). He urged his supporters across the nine local government areas of Borno South to rally behind Ndume, describing him as the party’s adopted candidate.

“Power comes from God, and the party has spoken. I call on all my supporters to give one hundred percent support to Senator Ndume,” Askira said in a statement released by his media aide.

The endorsement strengthens Ndume’s position ahead of the 2027 elections, as APC leaders in the state have reportedly raised more than 40 million naira to purchase his nomination form. Ndume, who has represented Borno South in the Senate since 2011, is regarded as one of the most influential lawmakers from the region.

Political observers say Askira’s withdrawal reflects efforts by the APC to maintain unity and avoid internal divisions in the run‑up to the polls. The move also underscores Governor Zulum’s influence in shaping consensus candidacies within the party.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the development highlights the strategic alliances forming in Borno State, where security challenges and governance priorities remain central issues for voters.
