KATSINA, Nigeria (AP) — Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has been endorsed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Katsina State, after party delegates and leaders affirmed his candidacy through a consensus vote. The decision strengthens APC’s hold on one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states and sets the stage for a competitive race.

Delegates gathered at the People’s Square in Katsina to voice their support, with party officials describing the process as peaceful and transparent. “This shows unity and discipline within the APC family in Katsina,” said Yakubu Maccido, head of the electoral committee.

Radda, 54, is not just a politician but a familiar figure to many in Katsina. Born in a rural community, he worked his way up through teaching, local government service, and eventually national leadership as head of Nigeria’s small business agency, SMEDAN. He became governor in 2023 and has focused on tackling insecurity, improving schools, and supporting farmers. For many residents, his story is one of rising from modest beginnings to lead a state that has produced national figures like former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Katsina has struggled with violent attacks by armed groups known locally as bandits, who raid villages and disrupt farming. For ordinary families, politics is about whether they can plant crops safely, send children to school, or travel without fear. “We just want peace so we can farm again,” said Musa Abdullahi, a farmer from Funtua.

Supporters celebrated Radda’s endorsement, chanting slogans and pledging loyalty. “We believe in his leadership and his ability to protect our communities,” said delegate Ibrahim Musa. But opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), argue that APC’s dominance has not delivered enough change. PDP spokesperson Amina Lawal said her party would present “a credible alternative to address insecurity and poverty.”

Katsina’s economy depends heavily on agriculture, and insecurity has pushed up food prices across northern Nigeria and even into neighboring countries. That makes the state’s stability important not only for Nigeria but for West Africa’s food supply.

International observers, including the European Union and African Union, are expected to monitor Nigeria’s 2027 elections closely. Analysts say Katsina’s race will be a test of whether democracy can deliver stability in a region where coups and unrest have become more common. “Katsina’s election is not just about who governs the state,” said political analyst Kabiru Sani. “It is about whether Nigeria can secure its borders and remain a democratic anchor in West Africa.”

With Radda’s candidacy confirmed, APC will now focus on mobilizing voters and maintaining unity ahead of the polls. Opposition parties are expected to announce their candidates in the coming months, setting up a contest that will be watched both locally and internationally.
