LONDON (AP) — England manager Thomas Tuchel’s contract extension through Euro 2028 includes performance clauses, the Football Association confirmed Tuesday, as officials defended the timing of the deal ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said such conditions are standard in all FA contracts but declined to reveal the specific terms of Tuchel’s agreement. He rejected suggestions that securing Tuchel’s future before the World Cup was a gamble, insisting the governing body wanted to avoid uncertainty and retain a manager considered among the best in the game.
“The reality is he’s a top‑level manager who would be in demand and we knew we had someone who was doing a really good job,” Bullingham told BBC Sport. “We can’t just expect someone to wait around and just leave it and see how you go.”

Tuchel, 52, previously managed Chelsea and Bayern Munich and was appointed with the mandate to deliver England’s first World Cup title since 1966. His side will open their campaign against Croatia, aiming to end nearly six decades of frustration on football’s biggest stage.
Bullingham emphasized that the FA wanted to plan ahead for Euro 2028, which will be staged in England, and avoid speculation about Tuchel’s future overshadowing the World Cup. He said the extension was part of a broader strategy to ensure stability and continuity in the national team setup.
Internationally, the move reflects a growing trend among football federations to secure elite coaches long‑term, balancing immediate tournament pressures with preparations for future competitions. England’s decision highlights the importance of managerial stability as the team faces both the challenge of the 2026 World Cup and the expectation of delivering success on home soil two years later.
